A contemporary residence designed for a couple in Hermosa Beach, California — conceived from the ground up with a deliberate refusal of coastal cliché. The brief called for warmth and materiality over seaside references, answered through expansive oak millwork, backlit quartzite, and a palette of sand, stone, and black that feels grounded rather than borrowed from its setting. The open-plan living space is anchored by a full-height wine room — part storage, part sculpture — that divides the room without closing it, drawing the eye upward through the vaulted ceiling. Cove lighting runs the length of the space, quiet and continuous, letting the materials carry the atmosphere. A home that knows exactly where it is, and chooses not to perform it.
